Josef Levinson
“I have to do something to make it known to others.”
Josef joined the Lithuanian division of the Red Army. When he returned to his home shtetl of Veisiejai, he learned of the massacres of people from his village -- including his family members -- at nearby Katkiskes (Kapai site), and vowed he would make this tragedy known. When Lithuania gained independence, he traveled the country, erecting Jewish memorials on each of its 200+ massacre sites. Josef has also written two books documenting the Holocaust in Lithuania, Shoah: The Holocaust in Lithuania and Book of Sorrows.
“Being Jewish to me means a kind of humanity and a friendliness that I feel with people and among people, and a trust that comes from living together through the centuries... I am not religious, but on Tisha’Ba’v, the day that commemorates the destruction of the Jewish people, this day still touches my heart…”
